This is a traditional tortoiseshell design that dates back centuries. It combines classical hand-painting techniques and patterns in a modern fluted shape. Delicate pastel blues are accented with imperial red and deep blue, hand-painted on high-gloss Arita porcelain. The Arita artisans who create this stunning plate with its distinctive design follow time-honored methods. This tortoiseshell, or kikko design, originated from the time of the Japanese shoguns, but the rigid lines have been softened in this example - giving it a more modernist appeal.

Sauce Dish

Tiny plates are useful in a number of ways. They're handy dishes for holding condiments, dry seasonings like salt and pepper, soy sauce for sashimi, small delicacies, or pickles. Mini plates are also quite popular to collect thanks to their compact size, variety of designs, and visual impact on the dining table.

Arita Ware

Arita porcelain originates from an area known as Arita on the Island of Kyushu, Japan. It is known as the birthplace of fine Japanese porcelain, and the artisans of Arita have produced exceptional ceramic works for more than 400 years. The beautiful contrast between the porcelain and the hand-painting is obtained by using exceptionally high-quality porcelain stone, allowing the glazed surface to display a distinct glossy mirror with a rich ivory luster.
