This blue-striped mortar and Hinoki wood pestle set combines a classic, hand-crafted Japanese suribachi (pottery mortar bowl) with a traditional artisan-made pestle. The Mino ware mortar bowls are sealed with a low-luster white glaze, and the inside of the bowl has been specially grooved to create the ideal grinding surface. Suribachi are considered essential kitchen items for preparing Japanese recipes, and they easily handle the preparation of everything from sesame seeds to bonito flakes. The convenient pouring spout makes transferring liquids like salad dressings and sauces easy.

The specially engineered wooden pestle, or surikogi, is crafted from Japanese Cyprus—referred to as 'hinoki' in Japan. Hinoki wood is valued for its delicate fragrance, antibacterial properties, and ability to dry quickly. The convenient cord in the pestle's handle makes storage and drying simple. This set makes a beautiful gift and a wonderful addition to any cultured kitchen.

Mino Ware

Mino ware refers to pottery traditionally made in Japan’s eastern Gifu Prefecture, primarily in Tajimi, Toki, Mizunami, and Kani. This ancient method of producing elegant, durable ceramics has roots going back over 1300 years to Japan’s Kofun period in the 7th century. Typically found nested into the mountainsides, the unique kilns used to produce Mino ware are often referred to as anagama kilns, and the master artisans producing these stunning products continue to adhere to rigid standards to produce only the highest quality ceramics.
