This medium salad plate is formed using a unique clay mold to produce a rustic, earthenware look from porcelain. Before applying the glaze, artisans hand-brush layer upon layer of color for a pleasing unevenness that exudes both a vintage European warmth and a modern calming aesthetic. Thick and hard to chip yet lightweight, this Mino ware piece is practical for casual daily dining. The scalloped petal rim beautifully frames Japanese and Western dishes alike such as a salad, side dish, or toasted slice of shokupan (Japanese milk bread).

Mino Ware

Mino ware refers to pottery traditionally made in Japan’s eastern Gifu Prefecture, primarily in Tajimi, Toki, Mizunami, and Kani. This ancient method of producing elegant, durable ceramics has roots going back over 1300 years to Japan’s Kofun period in the 7th century. Typically found nested into the mountainsides, the unique kilns used to produce Mino ware are often referred to as anagama kilns, and the master artisans producing these stunning products continue to adhere to rigid standards to produce only the highest quality ceramics.
