Artisans from the Arita region of Japan carefully hand-paint these whimsical chawanmushi bowls, creating charming green and blue patterned circle motifs by linking freehand impressions into separate circular balls. Chawanmushi is a traditional Japanese custard or thickened savory broth, typically served as an appetizer or main meal. However, these circle-patterned chawanmushi bowls are tremendously versatile, making an excellent vessel for countless cold or hot broths, soups, small appetizers, or desserts. The bowl includes a lid (with a matching pattern) to help maintain the temperature of the bowl’s contents.

Chawanmushi Bowl

The unique steaming bowl called mushi wan (蒸し碗) is the size and shape of a tea cup and comes with a matching lid. It's used to make the popular Japanese dish chawanmushi, or Japanese steamed savory custard. This delicate appetizer is typically eaten with a small wooden or lacquered spoon. The bowl is also useful as a dessert cup to serve Western-style sweets like puddings and jellies.

Arita Ware

Arita porcelain originates from an area known as Arita on the Island of Kyushu, Japan. It is known as the birthplace of fine Japanese porcelain, and the artisans of Arita have produced exceptional ceramic works for more than 400 years. The beautiful contrast between the porcelain and the hand-painting is obtained by using exceptionally high-quality porcelain stone, allowing the glazed surface to display a distinct glossy mirror with a rich ivory luster.
