At first glance, this beautiful ramen bowl displays a conventional Japanese Edo scene, tranquil and serene. Look closer, however; a curious visitor has taken up residence in the scene, a Jurassic-era one at that. Including a dinosaur in the classic Edo scene lends amusement and whimsy, but there are historical ties. In the Mino region of Japan, where these bowls are carefully handcrafted, Dinosaur fossils are occasionally unearthed, which links the fine porcelain of this plate to a rich Jurassic history. The size of this bowl makes it ideal for many uses, from ramen and donburi to ice cream and desserts.

Ramen Bowl

This type of large bowl is ideal for serving noodle soup dishes like Japanese ramen, udon, and soba. Called ramen bachi (ラーメン鉢), they come in a variety of shapes and styles like fan-shaped, trumpet-shaped, high-footed, wide-mouthed, or multipurpose. Flatter and wider bowls typically hold more soup, noodles, and toppings. A ramen bowl also works for other types of dishes like pho, pasta, and entreé salads.

Mino Ware

Mino ware refers to pottery traditionally made in Japan’s eastern Gifu Prefecture, primarily in Tajimi, Toki, Mizunami, and Kani. This ancient method of producing elegant, durable ceramics has roots going back over 1300 years to Japan’s Kofun period in the 7th century. Typically found nested into the mountainsides, the unique kilns used to produce Mino ware are often referred to as anagama kilns, and the master artisans producing these stunning products continue to adhere to rigid standards to produce only the highest quality ceramics.
